The Struggle

Empowered by God’s Word

The road to the cross was a struggle. This Lenten season, we see Jesus descend the mount of glory so that he could enter a valley of suffering. He would be rejected by his people and betrayed by his disciple. Satan tempted him to give up, but he pressed on to the cross for you. Hebrews 2:18 says, “Indeed, because he suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.“ The struggle was real.

The Christian life is a struggle. The struggle is real. Faith in Christ doesn’t make us exempt from difficulties. But faith in Christ does give us strength to press on. This Lenten season, we will meditate on the words of the Psalm writers, who put the struggle of the believer into poetry and prayer. They cried out to God when they struggled against their enemies, against temptation, against guilt, and against the perspective that this life is unfair. The Psalm writers were able to press on in the struggle because they knew that their God was in control. They knew and prophesied that the promised Savior was coming. Their struggle is our struggle. Their hope is our hope. Their God is our God. This is a Savior who entered our struggle to win the victory over the struggle, to equip us for our struggle. The struggle is real. The struggle is good.

Opening Song - What Wondrous Love is This

Invocation

L. In the name of the Father and of the ☩ Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C. Amen.

Confession and Absolution

We begin the service by recognizing how we have fallen short of God’s will and desire for our lives, and we receive the good news that we are forgiven in Jesus Christ.

L. Let us approach God with a true heart and confess our sins, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us.

C. Lord of life, I confess that I am by nature dead in sin. For faithless worrying and selfish pride, for sins of habit and sins of choice, for the evil I have done and the good I have failed to do, you should cast me away from your presence forever. O Lord, I am sorry for my sins. Forgive me, for Jesus’ sake.

L. Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. In his great mercy, God made us alive in Christ even when we were dead in our sins. Hear the word of Christ just as he proclaimed to the paralytic: "Take heart, your sins are forgiven.” Let us take this forgiveness to heart and proclaim it to each other in the name of the Father, and of the ☩ Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Prayer of the Day

L. Almighty God, look with favor on your humble servants and stretch out the right hand of your power to defend us against all our enemies; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C. Amen.

First Lesson - Exodus 20:1-17

1 Then God spoke all these words:

2 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out from the land of Egypt, where you were slaves.

3 You shall have no other gods beside me. 4 You shall not make any carved image for yourself or a likeness of anything in heaven above, or on the earth below, or in the waters under the earth. 5 Do not bow down to them or be subservient to them, for I the LORD your God am a jealous God. I follow up one the guilt of the fathers with their children, their grandchildren, and their great-grandchildren, if they also hate me. 6 But I show mercy to thousands who love me and keep my commandments.

7 You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not permit anyone who misuses his name to escape unpunished.

8 Remember the Sabbath day by setting it apart as holy. 9 Six days you are to serve and do all your regular work, 10 but the seventh day shall be a sabbath rest to the LORD your God. Do not do any regular work, neither you, nor your sons or daughters, nor your male or female servants, nor your cattle, nor the alien who is residing inside your gates, 11 for in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and everything that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. In this way the LORD blessed the seventh day and made it holy.

12 Honor your father and your mother so that you may spend many days on the land that the LORD your God is giving to you.

13 You shall not commit murder.

14 You shall not commit adultery.

15 You shall not steal.

16 You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.

17 You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, his male servant, his female servant, his ox, his donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbor.

Psalm of the Day - Psalm 19

For the choir director. A psalm by David.

1 The heavens tell about the glory of God. The expanse of the sky proclaims the work of his hands.

2 Day after day they pour out speech.

Night after night they display knowledge.

3 They do not speak. They say no words.

Their voice is not heard.

4 Their voice goes out into all the earth,

and their word reaches the end of the world.

God has pitched a tent for the sun in the heavens.

5 It comes out like a bridegroom from his wedding canopy.

It celebrates like a champion who has run his race.

6 It sets out from one end of the heavens.

It runs until it reaches the other end.

There is nowhere to hide from its heat.

7 The law of the LORD is perfect.

It revives the soul.

The testimony of the LORD is trustworthy.

It gives wisdom to the inexperienced.

8 The precepts of the LORD are right.

They give joy to the heart.

The commandment of the LORD is bright.

It gives light to the eyes.

9 The fear of the LORD is pure.

It stands forever.

The just decrees of the LORD are truth.

They are altogether righteous.

10 They are more desirable than gold,

even better than much pure gold.

They are sweeter than honey,

even honey dripping from the honeycomb.

11 Yes, by them your servant is warned.

In keeping them there is great reward.

12 Who can recognize his own errors?

Declare me innocent of hidden sins.

13 Restrain your servant also from deliberate sins.

Do not let them rule over me.

Then I will be blameless.

Then I will be innocent of great rebellion.

14 May the speech from my mouth

and the thoughts in my heart be pleasing to you,

O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.

Second Lesson - 1 Corinthians 1:22-25

The message we proclaim of Christ crucified is "stumbling" and "folly" for the unbelieving world, but for us, it is the powerful gospel, the good news of our salvation.

22 Yes, Jews ask for signs, Greeks desire wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified—which is offensive to Jews and foolishness to Greeks, 24 but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 We preach Christ crucified, because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

Gospel - John 2:13-22

Jesus Christ, at the beginning of his earthly ministry, purified the temple, removing the vendors from it. God and his Word did not have the first place in the hearts of those people, but money. When asked by the Jews by what authority he did these things, Christ responded with a prophecy about his death and resurrection.

13 The Jewish Passover was near, so Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

14 In the temple courts he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and money changers sitting at tables. 15 He made a whip of cords and drove everyone out of the temple courts, along with the sheep and oxen. He scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. 16 To those selling doves he said, “Get these things out of here! Stop turning my Father’s house into a place of business!”

17 His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.”

18 So the Jews responded, “What sign are you going to show us to prove you can do these things?”

19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up again.”

20 The Jews said, “It took forty-six years to build this temple! And you are going to raise it in three days?” 21 But Jesus was speaking about the temple of his body. 22 When Jesus was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this. Then they believed the Scripture and what Jesus had said.

Children's Message

Song - Lord Keep Us Steadfast in Your Word

English Sermon -or- Bilingual Sermon

Confession of Faith - The Apostles' Creed

We speak the truths of the faith that have united the church for thousands of years.

I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

General Prayer

Use this time to pray to God about anything that is on your heart and mind. Remember who God is and how he describes himself in the Bible. Focus on his eternal perspective. Consider not only your own life, but also the lives of others. Finally, pray with confidence knowing that God hears you, and pray in the name of your savior, Jesus Christ.

The Lord's Prayer

Pray the prayer that Jesus taught his disciples.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread; forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us; lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

The Blessing

Just as God told Aaron to bless his people in this way, we ask God’s blessing on us as we go forth in our lives.

L. The Lord bless us and keep us.
The Lord make his face shine on us and be gracious to us.
The Lord look on us with favor and ☩ give us peace.

C. Amen
