November 8, 2020 - The Final Judgment
“Tested by families, for families (and others too). Church at Home is an interactive, weekly worship service to be held from the safety of your own home. Please do not feel pressured to go through the whole thing in one sitting. Rather, use each element of this service so that it serves as a blessing to you and your family.

The Final Judgment
The Prayer of Moses
Today we read a Psalm actually written by Moses, reminding us that on our own we are dust. Our days are like dandelion puffs blowing away in the wind. In light of that, we’ll be encouraged to “number our days aright,” all while knowing that, in Christ, we are fully prepared for the final judgment.
In the final judgment, everyone will have to appear before God the just judge who will judge everyone in his justice.

L. In the name of the Father and of the ☩ Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Confession and Absolution
We begin the service by recognizing how we have fallen short of God’s will and desire for our lives, and we receive the good news that we are forgiven in Jesus Christ.
L. Let us approach God with a true heart and confess our sins, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us.
C. Lord of life, I confess that I am by nature dead in sin. For faithless worrying and selfish pride, for sins of habit and sins of choice, for the evil I have done and the good I have failed to do, you should cast me away from your presence forever. O Lord, I am sorry for my sins. Forgive me, for Jesus’ sake.
L. Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. In his great mercy, God made us alive in Christ even when we were dead in our sins. Hear the word of Christ just as he proclaimed to the paralytic: "Take heart, your sins are forgiven.” Let us take this forgiveness to heart and proclaim it to each other in the name of the Father, and of the ☩ Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Prayer of the Day
L. Lord God Almighty, so rule and govern our hearts and minds by your Holy Spirit that we may always look forward to the end of this present evil age and to the day of your righteous judgment. Keep us steadfast in true and living faith and present us at last holy and blameless before you; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

First Lesson - Psalm 90
A prayer of Moses, the man of God.
1 Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. 2 Before the mountains were born, before you gave birth to the earth and the world, from eternity to eternity you are God.
3 You grind people to dust, and you say, “Return, children of Adam.”
4 For a thousand years in your sight are like a day, like yesterday that has gone by, or like a watch in the night.
5 You sweep them away like a flood. They are like sleep in the morning, like grass which changes quickly.
6 In the morning it sprouts and grows. By evening it is cut down, and it withers.
7 Surely, we are consumed by your anger, and by your wrath we are terrified.
8 You have laid out our guilty deeds in front of you. Our hidden sins are revealed in the light of your face.
9 For all our days pass away under your fury. We finish our years like a sigh.
10 The days of our lives add up to seventy years, or eighty years if we are strong. Yet the best of them are trouble and sorrow, for they disappear quickly, and we fly away.
11 Who can understand the power of your anger? But your fury is consistent with the fear that is owed to you.
12 Teach us to number our days in such a way that we bring a heart of wisdom.
13 Turn, O LORD! How long! Change your mind toward your servants.
14 Satisfy us in the morning with your mercy, so that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.
15Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, for as many years as we have seen trouble.
16Let your deeds be seen by your servants and your majesty by their children.
17 May the kindness of the Lord our God rest upon us. Establish the work of our hands for us. Yes, establish the work of our hands.
Second Lesson - I Thessalonians 5:1-11
The day of the Lord, that is, the end of the world, will come suddenly like a thief in the night. So what do we watch, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and the helmet of the hope of salvation.
1 Concerning the times and dates, brothers, there is no need to write to you, 2 for you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. 3 When people are saying, “Peace and security,” destruction will suddenly come on them, like labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will certainly not escape. 4 But you, brothers, are not in the dark so that this day takes you by surprise like a thief, 5 for you are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or the darkness. 6 So then let us not sleep like everyone else, but rather let us remain alert and sober.
7 To be sure, those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. 8 But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. 9 You see, God did not appoint us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. 10 He died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. 11 Therefore, encourage one another and build each other up, just as you are also doing.
Gospel - Matthew 25:31-46
In the final judgment, Christ will come and separate believers and unbelievers, and judge them. Believers, who produce fruit as evidence of their faith, will receive their inheritance in heaven, while unbelievers, who produce only the rotten fruits of unbelief, will receive eternal damnation in hell.
31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered in his presence, and he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. 34 Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me food to eat. I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink. I was a stranger and you welcomed me. 36 I was lacking clothes and you clothed me. I was sick and you took care of me. I was in prison and you visited me.’
37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you a drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or lacking clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’
40 “The King will answer them, ‘Amen I tell you: Just as you did it for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did it for me.’
41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire, which is prepared for the Devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you did not give me food to eat. I was thirsty and you did not give me anything to drink. 43 I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, lacking clothes and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not take care of me.’
44 “Then they will also answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or lacking clothes or sick or in prison and did not serve you?’
45 “At that time he will answer them, ‘Amen I tell you: Just as you did not do it for one of the least of these, you did not do it for me.’ 46 And they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

We speak the truths of the faith that have united the church for thousands of years.
I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Consider not only your own life, but also the lives of others. Finally, pray with confidence knowing that God hears you, and pray in the name of your savior, Jesus Christ.
The Lord's Prayer
Pray the prayer that Jesus taught his disciples.
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread; forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us; lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

Just as God told Aaron to bless his people in this way, we ask God’s blessing on us as we go forth in our lives.
